Starting something new is easier when you know what to expect. At Bloom & Sound, music therapy begins with a conversation about the person, their interests and the goals they would like support with. You do not need musical experience.
Before you book
Tell Flora who the sessions are for, your suburb and a little about what you are hoping for. You can ask about availability, fees, travel and whether the Chatswood studio, your home, a school or care setting, or online sessions might suit you. Detailed clinical information can wait until you speak with Flora.
Let her know whether you prefer English or Cantonese, and whether there are communication, sensory or access needs that would help her prepare.
The first sessions are a chance to understand you
New clients usually begin with an assessment period across the first three sessions. Flora uses musical interaction and observation to learn about the person's preferences, strengths and support needs. This is not a piano exam or a test of musical ability.
Depending on the person, musical experiences may include listening, singing, playing instruments, improvising or moving with music. The activities and pace are adapted as the sessions develop.
Agreeing on the next step
An initial assessment report brings together observations, proposed goals and recommendations. Discuss the cost of assessment, reports and any other work before proceeding. Ongoing sessions work towards agreed goals, with progress reviewed along the way.
Useful questions to bring
- What would a suitable starting plan look like?
- Which setting would work best for us?
- What are the session, travel and reporting costs?
- How will we review progress?
